In alchemical and esoteric symbolism, the fire of — is purification and transformation. The female figure inside the flame means the soul, the unconscious feminine principle (or anime) that goes through the test of fire to become something new. Wax dripping down the arm, — is an old form that melts. The red hand here is the — animus, as an active male/conscious beginning. The animus in Jungian symbolism manifests itself as strength, structure, protection, will, "the one who holds."
The hand here does not squeeze the candle furiously and does not try to extinguish it. It holds, supports, allows the flame to burn, even when the wax is already draining on the fingers. This is a classic gesture: I can handle your transformation.
The red color of the hand enhances the alchemical context. In the alchemy of rubedo —, the final stage is when opposites combine. The red hand seems to have already passed through the fire and now it has become a vessel for the anime.
The animus (hand) holds the anima (female figure in flame) in the heart of the alchemical fire. He does not save her from transformation and does not prevent her from burning — he is simply present and does not let her fall while the old form (wax) melts.
